The Energy Breakthrough Education Team have shared some important updates to the 2023 Event Program in Maryborough.

Around 60 teachers and team managers logged on via Webinar to learn the state of play with the Energy Breakthrough. The second part of the session was a walk-through of some exciting changes to the Maryborough event which are aimed at improving the experience for students, teachers and enabling schools to participate more easily and affordably.

Key Overall Points:

  • The overall event dates have not changed. Activities in Maryborough will begin on Wednesday 22nd and conclude on Sunday 26th November 2023.
  • All categories will proceed, includingRobotics, Junkyard Challenge, Pushcarts, HPV Primary, HPV Secondary, HPV TRYathlon and Energy Efficient Vehicles (EEVs).
  • Factors include impact on the program caused by COVID-19, increasing event operation cost and the new Time In Lieu Policy.
  • There will be a new event schedules for some categories for our event in November.
  • New capacity has been unlocked – so if schools would like to enter additional teams, this will be encouraged.

Key Changes by Category:

ROBOTICS UPDATE

  • No changes to program.
  • FRIDAY AM program.
  • Limit of four teams per school.
  • NEW Webinars in Term 3 (early July – dates to be announced), and
  • School PD visits with students and teachers are available with our Coordinator, Rob Higgins.

JUNKYARD CHALLENGE UPDATE

  • Moves to THURSDAY from SATURDAY.
  • Limit of four teams per school.
  • NEW Webinars in Term 3 (early July – dates to be announced) with our Coordinator, Mary Preston.

PUSHCARTS UPDATE

  • No changes to program.
  • WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY program.
  • Increases cap from three teams per school to four teams per school.
  • A New Pushcarts Resource Kit is coming in Term 3 targeting at new schools.
    The Kit will include D.I.Y Pushcart Plans and Drawings, Parts List to build a pushcart for $300 – $400, mentoring with other Pushcart schools, visits from our Coordinator, Rob Higgins, and a promotional pack to help rally other students to get involved.

HPV PRIMARY

  • Moves to Track One.
  • Program moves forward to WEDNESDAY to FRIDAY from THURSDAY to SATURDAY.
  • Increases capacity to 135 teams total.
  • Increases cap from three teams per school to four teams per school.
  • Will camp on Princes Park and Hockey Field / In-Field of
  • Schools wishing to submit an additional team to enter can do so via the MyEB portal.

NEW HPV PRIMARY TIMETABLE at a glance

WEDNESDAY: Judging and scrutineering
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Practice session with the TRYathlon Primary teams.
THURSDAY: 9am – 5pm Trial: First 8 hours with the TRYathlon Primary teams.
FRIDAY AM: 6am – 12pm Trial: Final 6 hours without TRYathlon teams.

TRYATHLON Changes

TIMETABLES
Primary TRYathlon teams will follow the HPV Primary Program:

  • WEDNESDAY: Judging
  • WEDNESDAY: Practice session with the HPV Primary teams.
  • THURSDAY: Trial: First 8 hours with the HPV Primary teams.
  • FRIDAY PM: TT and Obstacle.

Secondary TRYathlon teams will follow the HPV Secondary Program:

  • FRIDAY AM: Judging
  • FRIDAY PM: TT and Obstacle.
  • FRIDAY NIGHT: Practice session with the HPV Secondary teams.
  • SATURDAY: Trial: First 8 hours with the HPV Secondary teams.
  • All TRYathlon teams will complete the Time Trial and Obstacle Rally together on Friday PM.

LOCATIONS

  • TRYathlon Time Trial on top loop of Track 1.
  • TRYathlon Obstacle on front straight of Track 2.
  • TRYathlon 8 Hour Trial on Track 1.

HPV SECONDARY & ENERGY EFFICIENT VEHICLES CHANGES

  • No major changes to program.
  • All activities remain on Track 1.
  • Schools camping on Jubilee Oval will need to bump in around the HPV Primary Trial event.
  • 24 Hour Trial will now begin at 12noon on Saturday until 12noon on Sunday.
  • First 8 Hours of Trial will be shared with TRYathlon Secondary teams.
  • Increased cap from three teams per school to four teams per school.

THURSDAY NIGHT ACTIVITIES

To help build on the atmosphere and the experience for students and teachers, there will be some additional activities including a Show’N’Shine: A chance for schools to bring together and share what they’ve built, a Guest Speaker / Communicator and a Movie Night.
